Bone Disorder Clinic

Organized through the Center for Human Genetics and the Department of Orthopaedics of University Hospitals of Cleveland, in Cleveland, Ohio, the Bone Disorders Clinic offers comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and management for patients with hereditary/familial bone disorders. Because more than 200 hereditary disorders affecting skeletal development have been identified, an accurate diagnosis is essential for optimal patient care. Therefore, orthopedic surgeons and geneticists work together to determine the diagnosis and formulate an optimal plan for treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Who is appropriate for referral to the clinic?
Any patient with a genetic or familial bone disorder of known or unknown cause
Any patient with short stature of unknown cause or unusual skeletal deformity
Any patient with a history of repeated fractures or sites of bony overgrowth.
Can my child or my patient come if they are already have a diagnosis?
Yes. Perhaps you and your managing physicians would benefit from a second opinion or management input. Some families choose to come once. Others prefer to be followed by our professionals annually.
Who sees patients and what do they do?
An intake would be done by a board certified genetic counselor. The patient would then be seen by a medical geneticist (either Dr. Warman or Dr. Robin) and by an orthopaedist. X-rays can be done and interpreted at the time of the appointment, if needed. Access to specialists in cardiology, neurology, radiology, ophthalmology, audiology, and orthotics/prosthetics are available, as appropriate. Appointments generally take approximately 2 hours. We attempt to answer all questions and always send a full written report to the care providers.
Is this research?
No! If appropriate, individuals are offered the opportunity to participate in ongoing research. However, this is a clinical visit. This means it is strictly aimed at helping the patient. No one is under any obligation to participate in any type of research. Additionally, because the visit is clinical, there is a fee for service. This fee can certainly be billed to an insurance company, but patients are responsible for co-payments or deductibles
